Join top journalists, filmmakers, funders and analysts for a day-long deep dive into the latest techniques for evaluating the outcomes of public interest media.

Insightful keynotes and hands-on workshops will contrast assessment approaches in the fields of entertainment, reporting and documentary, surfacing insights from each field.

Speakers will include:

  • Chad Boettcher – Executive Vice President, Social Action and Advocacy, Participant Media, who will unveil Participant’s Impact Index, a framework for tracking large-scale public response to feature films. Boettcher has led the creation, development and execution of social action campaigns for such recent releases asLincoln, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and A Place at the Table.
  • David Corn – Washington Bureau Chief for Mother Jones and MSNBC analyst, who will break down the extraordinary response to the magazine’s release of the video featuring Mitt Romney’s 47% remarks. Corn’s best-selling books include Hubris: The Inside Story of Spin, Scandal, and the Selling of the Iraq War.
  • Charles Lewis – Founding Executive Editor of The Investigative Reporting Workshop at American University’s School of Communication, and a bestselling author, investigative journalist, and former 60 Minutes producer. He will draw insights from his recent report, The Art, Science and Mystery of Nonprofit News Assessment, which examines the challenges of evaluating journalism impact.
  • Bonnie Benjamin-Phariss – Executive Producer, Vulcan Productions and co-producer of 10×10, a first-of-its-kind global campaign to educate girls. She will speak about the campaign’s outreach around CNN Film’s Girl Rising, which tells stories about the power of education to change a girl-and the world-with the help of celebrated writers and renowned actresses including Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett and Selena Gomez.
  • John Johnson – Co-founder of pioneering social news site BuzzFeed, and the director of the Harmony Institute, an interdisciplinary research center that studies the impact of entertainment on individuals and society. He will discuss emerging techniques for tracking the role that stories play in social change through Harmony Institute’s ImpactSpace.
  • The day’s workshops will delve further into emerging methods for assessing the impact of both news and films, inviting participants to share and sharpen their own practices. Workshop leaders will include Cara Mertes, director of the Ford Foundation’s JustFilms program, leaders from the The Media Consortium and analytics firm Crimson Hexagon, and others still to be announced.
